FINECUT Locks Deal Ahead of Cannes Bow

After scoring North American distribution last week ahead of its international premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, where it will screen in Out of Competition section on May 18th, NA Hong-jin’s THE WAILING has locked new deals with European distributor Metropolitan Filmexport for France, French-speaking Benelux and Switzerland, as well as Infotainment Media in China. THE WAILING was bought by Well Go USA last week for North America, where it will open on May 27th.

Following his award-winning films The Chaser (2008) and The Yellow Sea (2010), both of which also screened at the Cannes Film Festival, NA’s film features KWAK Do-won as provincial cop in over his head when a bizarre malady leads to a string of violent deaths. When his daughter begins to show symptoms, he employs the help of a shaman, played by HWANG Jung-min. CHUN Woo-hee and Japanese star KUNIMURA Jun also feature in the cast.

Following 20th Century Fox’s partial investment in The Yellow Sea, THE WAILING marks Fox International Productions fourth fully invested venture in the Korean market, following Running Man (2013), Slow Video (2014) and IM Sang-soo’s Intimate Enemies last year. Following the film’s strong reception at a press screening in Seoul last week, NA’s latest opened domestically on May 11th, a day ahead of schedule. It attracted a robust 170,437 spectators on its opening day.

The film is being repped internationally by FINECUT, which is also presenting titles such as KIM Jee-woon’s The Age of Shadows and John H. LEE’s Operation Chromite during the Cannes Film Market.
