Speckles : The Tarbosaurus Preparing for 2nd Go-Round in Theaters

Following the success of Speckles: The Tarbosaurus in 2012, the second most popular Korean animation of all time (behind only 2011’s Leafie, A Hen into the Wild) with one million missions, Dream Search C&C announced last Friday that they have paired up with China’s Hengsheng Group, which is preparing for its initial public offering on Korea’s KOSDAQ Exchange, to produce a sequel that will target both markets.

In the films, Speckles is a dinosaur called a tarbosaurus who roams Asia with his son in tow during the Late Cretaceous period, some 70 million years ago. The original film was distributed by CJ Entertainment and ultimately sold to 37 nations, while also yielding solid returns through IPTV and physical media streams.

According to Dream Search C&C head LEE Chang-hoon, in addition to a simultaneous release in South Korea and China next summer, the 3D animation will also be supported with a line of merchandising which will cater to Chinese consumers. LEE hopes the upcoming project can help to further the brand of Korean animation on the global stage. The project is the latest in a long line of major co-productions between the powerhouse national film industries.
