DEAD END Takes Top NAFF Prize

7 Awards Handed Out on Closing Night

The 7th edition of the Network of Asian Fantastic Films (NAFF) came to an end last night with a closing ceremony and the presentation of its seven awards. Staged in Bucheon city’s Koryo Hotel and running concurrently with the 18th Pucheon International Fantastic Film Festival (PiFan), this year’s NAFF recorded 449 meetings between the 27 participating projects and 47 attending film companies from Korea and overseas.

Among the four cash prizes, the top Bucheon Award, worth KRW 15 million (USD 14,600), went to the Indian comedy Dead End from Dev BENEGAL. The project previously took the NAFF Award during the Hong Kong International Film Festival’s Hong Kong Asian Film Financing Forum (HAF). The NAFF Award, supported by PiFan, and the Media Vision Award, both worth KRW 10 million (USD 9,700), were conferred to the sci-fi Cartidge and the Man Who Copied Himself, from Taiwan’s Bruce Hwang CHEN. The Cheong Song White Porcelain Award, also worth KRW 10 million (USD 9,700), was won by the mystery film N.S.I. from Korea’s LEE Ju-hean.

Additionally, there were three post-production supports awards handed out. The suspense romance In the Name of Love, from China’s CONG Cai, took home the Moneff Award for editing support, the fantasy thriller The Shadow Zone, by local filmmaker JO Jin-kyu received the Wave Lap Award for sound mixing support and the Color Award for DI support was won by the fantasy melodrama A Man for 100 Days, from Korean director Ian BAE.

This year’s NAFF jury consisted of AIHARA Hiromi, the President of Bewiz, Inc. in Japan, Michael FAVELLE, the CEO of Australian firm Odin’s Eye Entertainment, Caroline KWAUK, Executive Director of Ascension Pictures in Singapore/Hong Kong, and Wellmade Film CEO Romeo Noh.

Among this year’s 27 projects, six were part of the Thailand country spotlight. Previous NAFF projects such as YEON Sangho's The King of Pigs (2011) and The Terror, LIVE have gone to find wide success and acclaim. PiFan, which will hand out its own awards on Friday, July 25th, continues until the 27th.
