Jecheon Prepares to Celebrate 10th Edition

O Muel’s Latest Opens JIMFF

The Jecheon International Music and Film Festival is gearing up for its 10th anniversary next month and kicking off this year’s proceedings will be the Korean premiere of Golden Chariot in the Sky, the new film from Jiseul (2012) director O Muel. 88 films from 32 countries will screen at JIMFF this summer, accompanied by 30 musical performances.

O Muel’s Golden Chariot in the Sky, which premiered at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival earlier this month, follows O’s Jiseul, one of the most popular Korean indies of recent memory. Detailing the Jeju Uprising of 1948 in luminous black and white photography, the film earned a Grand Prize at the Sundance Film Festival and screened all around the world.

Seven films will compete in the World Film Music Today category. These include O Muel’s opener and Blue Sky Bones, the directorial debut of Chinese rock legend CUI Jian. Among other films at the festival this year will be Lenny Abrahamson’s Frank, starring Michael Fassbender, and eight local features in the Korean Film Music Now section. Sidebars this year include 10th JIMFF Curtain Call, which will see popular former Jecheon titles screening again, such as Searching for Sugar Man (2011).

Every year, on an open air stage by the Cheongpung Lake, JIMFF stages its Cinema Concert screenings, which feature films accompanied by live music. This summer, the classic Japanese silent films Japanese Girls at the Harbor (1933) by SHIMIZU Hiroshi and A Story of Floating Weeds (1934) by OZU Yasujiro will be presented.

This trailer, which demonstrates the harmony between film, music and nature, was directed by KU Hye-sun, who has been a consistent presence in Jecheon over the years. The 10th edition of JIMFF will run from August 14th to 19th.
