39th Seoul Independent Film Festival Winds to a Close

KIM Lee-chang’s documentary DISCIPLINE Wins Grand Prize

KIM Lee-chang’s debut film Discipline was chosen as the Grand Prize winner at the 39th Seoul Independent Film Festival. The festival which opened on November 28th ended its 9-day journey on December 6th with a closing ceremony emceed by actress KIM Hye-na and actor SEO Jun-young.

Discipline is a documentary which introduces the utterly humble life of a martial arts master. Main competition jury member and film critic KIM So-yong states that the film “displayed a cinematic strength from the very first scene in which a man ‘disciplines’ his body with weights, as if he was some kind of ascetic”, also adding, “we felt we had to respond to the film’s sensibility and strong emotional appeal with the highest accolade”.

Other main competition category award recipients include PARK Moon-chil’s My Place and KWAK Min-seung’s Mirae which won the Jury Prize, GU Jahywan’s Red Tomb, SIN Isu and CHOI Aleaum’s short Names, LEE Mi-rang’s Chunjung and SEO Dong-ill’s Dumulmeori and LEE Won-woo’s The Membrane.

During this year’s Seoul Independent Film Festival, the number of screened films increased to a total of 117. The number of venues also grew to four compared with the three used during previous editions. In addition, audience participation was on the rise, resulting in sellouts for both feature and short films during 18 screenings and a 30% overall increase in attendance, totaling 8,321 admissions, the highest turnout to date.
