Korean-Belgian Jung HENIN takes top animation honors at Annecy

<Approved for Adoption>, a feature film from Korean-Belgian comic book artist Jung HENIN and Laurent BOILEAU, won two top honors at this month’s Annecy International Animated Film Festival, held June 4-9 in France.

<Approved for Adoption> is the autobiographical story of the HENIN’s adoption by a Belgian family at age five in 1971 and his life thereafter as an adoptee. The film was made with a variety of media, using animation for memories and live action to follow the filmmaker’s first return visit to Seoul, as well as both news footage and home video. The film won both the UNICEF Award and Annecy’s Audience Award.

The Annecy International Animated Film Festival has been held biannually since 1960, and became a yearly event since 1998. It is one of only film festivals sponsored by the International Animated Film Association and has established itself as one of the world’s premiere venues for new animated features and shorts.

In the 2012 edition, Anca DAMIAN’s animated documentary <Crulic - The Path to Beyond> took home the Crystal Award for best overall feature and Michaela PAVLATOVA's fantasy comedy <Tram> won the Crystal best short award in addition to a FIPRESCI Prize. Participating Korean features included KIM Sun-ah and PARK Se-hee’s <The Dearest> in competition as well as YEUN Sang-ho’s <The King of Pigs> and OH Sung-yun’s <Leafie, a Hen into the Wild> out of competition. A variety of other Korean shorts, student films and made-for-television programs also screened.
