Release Dates Confirmed for Philippines, North America, Japan and Italy; Spain, Latin America and Five Other Countries Still Being Finalized

Yeon Sang-ho's Train to Busan is returning to major overseas markets in a 4K remastered version to mark its 10th anniversary. Release dates have been confirmed in four markets — the Philippines, North America, Japan and Italy — while eight other countries, including Spain and several Latin American territories, are still finalizing schedules.

This re-release features newly remastered picture and sound in 4K, marking the first time Train to Busan has screened theatrically in the format.

Starting in the Philippines, Expanding to Europe and Latin America

The rollout is staggered across roughly a month. It begins in the Philippines on August 5, followed by North America on August 14 and Japan on August 21, before moving to Italy on September 2.

The scale of the release is especially notable in the United States. Where the 2016 release was a limited run in a small number of theaters, this re-release will open wide, with the theater count expanding more than tenfold. Distribution in the U.S. and Canada is handled by Well Go USA, which has secured more than 500 screens across North America — compared to fewer than 50 screens for the original 2016 release.

Lee Jung-ha, who oversaw international sales for the film, said the wide re-release marks the first full-scale wide theatrical run in North America in the decade since the limited 2016 opening, and expressed hope that the 4K version will offer overseas audiences a fresh viewing experience.

2016: Ten Million Admissions at Home, an Invitation to Cannes

Train to Busan opened in South Korea on July 20, 2016, becoming the first Korean zombie film to surpass 10 million admissions domestically. Prior to its domestic release, the film was invited to the Midnight Screening section of the Cannes Film Festival, earning praise from filmmakers including Guillermo del Toro and Edgar Wright.
 

Theatrical Distribution, 10 Years Later

This re-release marks a case in which a decade-old film, following a new restoration, has returned to theatrical distribution networks. Combined, the four confirmed markets and eight markets still being finalized bring the total to 12 markets, with the U.S. theater count now exceeding what the film secured in 2016.

Yeon Sang-ho's new film Colony is also set for a North American release on August 28. Colony was invited to the Midnight Screening section of the 79th Cannes Film Festival, holding its world premiere on May 15 local time — the same section in which Train to Busan was invited a decade earlier. The new film's North American release falls just two weeks after the Train to Busan re-release opens in the same market, and attention is turning to how both titles will perform in the U.S. market this August.
