Hollywood remake of a Korean sci-fi film that flopped domestically in 2003 builds on its Oscar recognition with three nominations at the Critics Choice Super Awards

Twenty-three years ago, director Jang Joon-hwan's "Save the Green Planet!" drew barely 70,000 admissions in its home market. The film went on to win several best new director prizes at Korean film festivals for its wildly original premise, but never found a domestic audience. CJ ENM, which had invested in and distributed the original, recognized untapped potential in the underappreciated title and began developing a Hollywood remake in 2018. Seven years later, that remake, "Bugonia," has picked up three nominations at the 6th Critics Choice Super Awards, including Best Science Fiction/Fantasy Movie, with stars Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons earning nods for Best Actress and Best Actor. The nominations mark the latest milestone in a Korean film IP's expanding footprint on the global stage.

"Bugonia" follows two young men who become convinced that the CEO of their company is an alien bent on destroying Earth, and kidnap her, a premise lifted directly from "Save the Green Planet!" CJ ENM had been considering a remake since its early involvement as the original's financier and distributor, and the project gained real momentum once Ari Aster, director of "Hereditary" and "Midsommar," came on board as a producer. From there, playwright and screenwriter Will Tracy wrote the script, and Yorgos Lanthimos, director of "Poor Things," took the helm.

With CJ ENM involved across the project from development and talent packaging through distribution, "Bugonia" was already nominated for Best Picture, Best Actress (Stone), and Best Adapted Screenplay (Tracy) at the 31st Critics Choice Awards last December, and picked up nominations in the same three categories at the Academy Awards this January. The Super Awards, by contrast, spotlight genre filmmaking across science fiction, superhero, horror, and action categories; there is no ceremony, and winners will be announced on August 6.

A Global IP Strategy, Not a Single Success

The film's continued recognition points to something beyond a single awards-season success story. Rather than simply exporting a finished Korean film abroad, CJ ENM repackaged the underlying story and world of "Save the Green Planet!" for international financing and production, a model that turned a domestic box-office disappointment into a title recognized across two major awards seasons more than two decades later. It's a case study in how overlooked Korean IP can be rediscovered on the global stage.

The project also fits a broader pattern in CJ ENM's international strategy. The company has previously diversified its overseas approach through the TV adaptation of "Snowpiercer," its co-production of "Past Lives," and its 2022 acquisition of Endeavor Content, now operating as Fifth Season. "Bugonia" demonstrates that engaging international creators from the earliest stages of IP development, rather than simply selling a finished film or its format, can translate into recognition at major award shows, and it leaves CJ ENM's remake pipeline worth watching going forward.
