Why Hong Sangsoo Works in the Arthouse Market

Hong Sangsoo's 34th feature, The Day She Returns, had its distribution rights secured by The Cinema Guild for North America before the film even left its festival premiere, followed by deals across France, Spain, the United Kingdom, Finland, China, and Taiwan — seven territories in all. That an arthouse black-and-white film could land in seven markets at this pace speaks to a simple dynamic: rather than having to re-convince each market from scratch, the director's name already functions as its own guarantee of quality.

North American distribution went, once again, to The Cinema Guild. The New York-based company, which has long specialized in arthouse cinema — including works by Claire Denis, Béla Tarr, and Agnès Varda — has been acquiring Hong Sangsoo's new films at the Berlin International Film Festival every year since On the Beach at Night Alone in 2017. In Europe, France's Carlotta Films, Spain's Atalante, and London's ICA Films each secured distribution rights. In Asia, Hugoeast from mainland China and Cola Films from Taiwan joined the lineup.

Hong has received the Silver Bear five times at the Berlinale, and this year marked his seventh consecutive invitation to the festival. Across 34 films and an accumulated body of awards, he has secured a place among the directors that the European arthouse market reliably trusts. Just as Hollywood depends on franchise IP, the arthouse market uses the track record of proven auteurs as its benchmark for confidence.

Within this structure, Korean sales company Finecut has served as the conduit connecting Hong's work to international markets. At this year's Berlinale, Finecut closed deals across all seven territories for The Day She Returns while simultaneously securing international rights to Dora (dir. July Jung) — deals that continued through to Cannes. The company operates less as an agent for individual films and more as a hub for the international circulation of Korean arthouse cinema.

Peter Kelly, President of The Cinema Guild, who closed the distribution deal on the floor of the Berlin festival, said: "The magic of Hong Sangsoo is endless." But that magic was not conjured overnight. It rests on nearly three decades of sustained filmmaking and an awards record built through repeated returns to the Berlinale. The seven-territory distribution of The Day She Returns can be read as one measure of how that accumulated body of work is valued in the international film market.
