BEEF, the Netflix and A24 co-production that swept eight Emmy Awards in 2023, returns for its second season on April 16 with Academy Award winner Youn Yuh-jung and Cannes Best Actor winner Song Kang-ho in pivotal roles. The casting of two of Korean cinema's most internationally decorated performers in a Korean-American creator's U.S. series signals a new chapter in the global trajectory of Korean film talent.

Season 2 takes the anthology route, bringing a fresh story and entirely new characters. The new installment is set at Monte Vista Point, an elite country club owned by a Korean billionaire. The season centers on two couples from different generations - junior employees Ashley (Cailee Spaeny) and Austin (Charles Melton), and their general manager Josh (Oscar Isaac) alongside his wife Lindsay (Carey Mulligan) - whose lives become entangled in an unexpected chain of events. Creator and showrunner Lee Sung Jin describes the season as quieter and more calculated than Season 1, exploring the tensions and unspoken pressures of workplace relationships.

Youn Yuh-jung plays Chairwoman Park, the formidable Korean billionaire who owns the country club, while Song Kang-ho appears as Dr. Kim, her second husband. Korean actress Jang Seo-yeon rounds out the Korean cast as Eunice, Chairwoman Park's personal translator, in a main cast role. The ensemble also includes William Fichtner and Mikaela Hoover as a wealthy member couple, and K-pop artist BM — leader of co-ed group KARD — making his acting debut as Woosh, the club's tennis coach.

Lee Sung Jin returns as creator, showrunner, and executive producer. Steven Yeun, who starred in Season 1, steps into a producer role this season. The eight-episode season premieres globally on April 16.

BEEF Season 1 launched in April 2023 and went on to claim eight Primetime Emmy Awards — including Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series — along with trophies at the Golden Globes, Critics Choice Awards, and SAG Awards. Originally conceived as a limited series, its exceptional reception paved the way for an anthology continuation.

The significance of this casting extends well beyond the names involved. Where the global reach of Squid Game and the K-drama wave demonstrated the appeal of Korean content itself, BEEF Season 2 represents something different: two of Korean cinema's most celebrated figures taking on central roles within an American auteur-driven production — on their own terms, not as representatives of a Korean title.

The pairing is without precedent. Youn Yuh-jung won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for Minari (2021); Song Kang-ho received the Best Actor prize at Cannes for Broker (2022). That both appear together in a single production is a remarkable convergence of Korean cinema's international achievements.

The A24 factor is equally noteworthy. The production company, long associated with balancing independent artistic vision with commercial viability, co-produced Minari and has deepened its ties with Korean filmmakers through this season. With a Korean-American creator, Korean lead actors, and A24's backing, BEEF Season 2 sits at a meaningful intersection of Korean and American creative industries. How the series performs during awards season — and what precedents it sets for Korean actors pursuing sustained careers in U.S. productions — will be worth watching closely.
