The Cultural Heritage Administration and the National Heritage Promotion Institute announced on the 12th that the virtual reality (VR) film “Dani: The Portrait of a Beauty” has been officially invited to the 73rd Melbourne International Film Festival.

The Melbourne International Film Festival, launched in 1952, is Australia’s largest film festival.

“Dani: The Portrait of a Beauty” has been selected for the festival’s Extended Reality (XR) section and will be screened at ACMI’s Swinburne Studio until the 17th.

The film showcases 15 works by late Joseon-era painter Shin Yun-bok (1758–?), including his masterpieces “Portrait of a Beauty” and “Lovers Under the Moon,” as well as “Watching Waterfalls From a Pavilion by a Pine” “Keimyung Gok Amdo” and “Beautiful Meeting at a Pavilion by a Pine”

It tells the journey of the heroine Dani in search of true beauty, weaving in the love triangle between scholar Yisaeng and courtesan Chu-hui, brought vividly to life through cutting-edge VR technology.

In particular, the film incorporates traditional pansori and dance to convey the charm of Korean performing arts in a vivid way.

Director Yoo Sang-hyun, professor of Art & Technology at Seokyeong University, said, “I wanted to express the inner and outer beauty of women depicted in Joseon paintings through the new medium of VR.”

He added, “I’m delighted to showcase the beauty of Korea to the world by combining tradition with technology.”
