The Film, Funded by KOFIC Location Incentive Program 2021
Return to Seoul, directed by Davy Chou, a Cambodian-French film director, and starring Korean actors Park Jimin and Oh Gwangrok, has been selected to represent Cambodia in the International Feature Film Award at the 95th Academy Awards ceremony that will be held in 2023. The Cambodian Oscar Selection Committee said, “To represent Cambodia, we happily selected Return to Seoul, which shows Davy Chou’s passion.”
Return to Seoul depicts the experiences of Freddie (Park Jimin), a Korean-born French woman who was adopted at a young age and raised in France, as she returns to South Korea for the first time. She accidentally steps on Korean soil and meets her biological father (Oh Gwangrok) after her flight to Japan was changed due to a typhoon. The film was invited to the 75th Festival de Cannes’ Un Certain Regard, drawing attention from home and abroad.
Return to Seoul, funded by KOFIC Location Incentive Program in 2021, was officially invited to the ‘A Window on Asian Cinema’ section at the 27th Busan International Film Festival, which closed last week. Director Davy Chou, Actors Park Jimin, and Oh Gwangrok visited Busan in person and had time to meet the audience through open talks.
The International Feature Film Award at Oscar accepts only one film per country. The Korean entry this year is Director Park Chanwook's Decision to Leave. The Academy Awards Committee will select a total of 15 films by December 21 and announce the final nomination on January 24, 2023. The 95th Academy Awards ceremony will be held in Los Angeles on March 12, 2023.
