KIM Bora Debut Continues Sensational Awards Run

House of Hummingbird (2018), the debut of director KIM Bora, has bagged yet another major prize on the film festival circuit, after picking up the Grand Prize from the official competition of the recently concluded 45th Seattle International Film Festival.

The feature debut of the acclaimed short film director KIM, House of Hummingbird is inspired by the director’s own experiences as a young girl in Seoul. The film features PARK Ji-hu as a 14-year-old girl in Seoul in 1994, who tries to navigate her complicated family and social life, during which time she also becomes close to her unusual calligraphy teacher, played by KIM Sae-byuk.

SIFF’s competition jury offered the following comment for the film: “In a unanimous decision we are excited to honor this surprisingly mature first feature, anchored by an effortless performance by its young lead and surrounded by well-developed supporting characters. We were captivated by this movie for its authentic point of view and the universal, yet individual experience of a specific culture and time.”

Following its debut in the New Currents competition of the Busan International Film Festival last year, where it picked up the NETPAC Award and the KNN Audience Award, House of Hummingbird embarked on an impressive run that began with the Grand Prix for the Best Feature (Generation 14plus) at the Berlin International Film Festival and continued with several other prizes, including the Best International Narrative Feature, Best Actress and Best Cinematography Awards at the Tribeca Film Festival. The film has also won the Golden Tulip for Best Film from the Istanbul Film Festival and Best Feature Film at the Molodist - Kyiv International Film Festival, among a total of 16 festival prizes to date.

Future festival dates include the Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal, the Taipei International Film Festival and the Melbourne International Film Festival. House of Hummingbird is expected to receive a Korean theatrical release at some point in August.
