New York Asian Film Festival to Honor Young Korean Star

Korean actor RYU Jun-yeol (Believer, 2018) will receive the Screen International Rising Star Asia Award at this year’s 18th edition of the New York Asian Film Festival (NYAFF), which is scheduled to run from June 28 to July 14.

RYU’s first big break came in 2015, when he appeared in the Korean Academy of Film Arts feature graduation project Socialphobia, which debuted to strong reviews at the Busan International Film Festival. After building a following on the small screen, RYU exploded as a film star in 2017, when he appeared in prosecutor saga The King, legal thriller Heart Blackened and the year’s biggest hit A Taxi Driver

He followed those up with the healing drama Little Forest and the smash thriller Believer in 2018 and so far has appeared in the action-thriller Hit-and-Run Squad and the hit financial drama Money this year. He will next be seen in the war drama The Battle: Roar to Victory, alongside his A Taxi Driver co-star YOO Hae-jin.

RYU will receive his award in New York on June 6. Also receiving the Rising Star Asia Award this year will be the award-winning actress KOMATSU Nana from Japan. Previous Korean recipients of the award include both KONG Hyo-jin and SO Ji-sub in 2009 and KIM Go-eun in 2013. The New York Asian Film Festival is co-presented by Film at Lincoln Center and the New York Asian Film Foundation.
