JEONG Hee-jae Triumphs in Kazakhstan

JEONG Hee-jae’s indie drama A Haunting Hitchhike (2017) has picked up a Special Jury Prize from the recently concluded 14th Eurasia International Film Festival. Held in Kazakhstan, the film festival took place over July 1-7.

The drama follows Jeong-ae, a 16-year-old girl who lives with her ailing father in an area earmarked for redevelopment in Seoul. Her father believes it’s easier to give up but she wants to find a way out of her hardship. When she receives word from her long-lost mother one day, she sets out to find her.

The debut film by JEONG, A Haunting Hitchhike debuted in the Korean Cinema Today-Vision section of the Busan International Film Festival last October. It went on to screen at the Seoul Independent Film Festival. The film was a recipient of the Asian Cinema Fund’s Post-Production Fund and the Audience Award at the Pitch & Catch session of the Seoul International Women’s Film Festival. In addition, it was provided financial support from the Seongnam Cultural Foundation.

Director JEONG previously made short films such as Bokja (2008) and A company on a dead gloomy night (2011).

Meanwhile, HAN Dae-kwang’s short film Three Moons was also invited to screen at the Eurasia International Film Festival as part of its short film competition.
