BBC Miniseries with Florence PUGH, Alexander SKARSGÅRD, and Michael SHANNON Due in the Fall
World-renowned director
PARK Chan-wook has reportedly completed production on his highly-anticipated John LE CARRÉ adaptation
The Little Drummer Girl. The six-episode production, a joint venture between British broadcaster BBC, American cable network AMC and The Ink Factory, is the director’s first small-screen foray and features Florence PUGH, Alexander SKARSGÅRD, and Michael
SHANNON.
PUGH features as Charlie, an actress who visits Greece, where she meets a dashing man (played by SKARSGÅRD) who turns out to be an Israeli intelligence officer. The young woman then becomes swept up in an espionage plot orchestrated by Michael SHANNON’s spymaster. The series completed its shoot in Greece in late May and will now enter post-production. The show is expected to bow on BBC and AMC at some point this fall.
Following early stumbling blocks, as the film failed to secure shooting permits for certain locations, the production was able to continue as intended through the intervention of the Hellenic Film Commission of the Greek Film Centre. Greece also stood in for other global locations such as Lebanon, Israel, Former Yugoslavia and Italy.
The series is not the first English-language production for the master filmmaker, who released the gothic drama
Stoker in 2013. PARK’s last work was the period thriller
The Handmaiden (2016), which earned the Best Foreign Language Film Award from the BAFTAs this year.
“It has been an incredible experience to film ‘The Little Drummer Girl’ in the very locations described in John LE CARRÉ’s book. The immense privilege of shooting at such historically and culturally important places such as the Acropolis or Temple of Poseidon cannot be understated,” stated director PARK. He added: “Greece, as the birthplace of Western drama, offers filmmakers a canvas of unique resonance and, for me, it is the perfect place to tell the story of Charlie.”
