The CINEMATEK in Brussels, Belgium is currently holding a retrospective featuring the works of Korean auteur director Hong Sangsoo. The event, which was first announced by the Belgian-European Union (EU) Korean Cultural Center on January 13, features all 21 of the director’s released films, including such titles as The Power Of Kangwon Province (1998), Virgin Stripped Bare Her Bachelors (2000), Hahaha (2010) and last year’s Claire’s Camera. Hong’s most recent work The Day After(2017) which premiered at the 70th Cannes Film Festival and competed for the Palme d’Or, is also included in the retrospective program. Additionally, Courtisane and Belgian cinephile collective Sabzian will release a publication titled ‘Hong Sangsoo, Infinite Worlds Possible’, which will be available at CINEMATEK during the retrospective.
Hong Sangsoo was on hand to participate in the opening ceremony of the retrospective, which took place at CINEMATEK on January 18, and participated in a ‘conversation with audience’ event. On January 19, Hong hosted a Master Class where he shared his filmmaking theories and techniques with those in attendance.
