TWELVE Invited to Berlin’s Forum Expanded Section

Video artist CHA Jea-min has been invited to partake in the Forum Expanded section of the 67th Berlin International Film Festival next month, returning to the festival two years after she debuted with two prior works in the same section. Her new project Twelve will take part in the Group Exhibition at the Akademie der Künste am Hanseatenweg.

As described by the Berlinale website, with Twelve, CHA “examines the pragmatic process underpinning the annual secret wage negotiations held between Korean employer and employee associations.” The film is based on a meeting held in 2015 and features 12 characters representing 12 different stages of the meeting. Twelve was commissioned by SeMA Biennale Mediacity Seoul in 2016.

Born in 1986 CHA studied Fine Arts at the Korea National University of Arts and at Chelsea College of Art and Design. Her earlier works include Sleep Walker (2009), It Is Not a Question but a Balloon (2010), Chroma Key and Labyrinth (2013), Trot, Trio, Waltz (2013) and Fog and Smoke, which earned the Excellence Prize from the Green Film Festival in Seoul and screened in competition at the DMZ International Documentary Film Festival in 2014.

In 2015, her works Autodidact and Hysterics screened at Berlinale before being invited to the Expanded Cinema for Shorts section of the Jeonju International Film Festival. Hysterics debuted at the Doosan Gallery in 2014.

Berlinale will take place from February 9th to 19th.
