Indie Auteurs in Hong Kong

Today, the Hong Kong International Film Festival (HKIFF) revealed the lineup for its upcoming 39th edition, which will kick off on March 23rd. Within the event’s diverse program this year is a quintet of works from South Korea, hailing from some of the country’s most prominent indie auteurs.

IM Kwon-taek 102nd film Revivre will screen in HKIFF’s Master Class program. Starring AHN Sung-ki, the thoughtful drama kicked off its festival run at the Venice International Film Festival last year. Another visible presence on the global festival circuit, PARK Jung-bum’s Alive will take part in the Global Vision section. A commissioned work from the Jeonju International Film Festival, PARK’s sophomore work has garnered a number of awards since its debut, including the Best Actor prize from the Mar del Plata International Film Festival.

More recent productions, such as JANG Kun-jae’s A Midsummer’s Fantasia and KIM Dae-hwan’s End of Winter, have been invited to the Indie Power lineup. A co-production with Japan and produced by KAWASE Naomi, JANG’s third film debuted as the opening film of the Nara International Film Festival. A graduate feature from Dankook University, End of Winter picked up the New Currents prize at the Busan International Film Festival last October.

Also screening will be the documentary Songs from the North, jointly produced by Korea, Portugal and the US, in the Reality Bites sidebar. Directed by YOO Soon-mi, the film has already screened at the Locarno and Toronto International Film Festivals.
HKIFF will take place over two weeks, concluding on April 6th.
