Korean Short Awarded in Muhr AsiaAfrica Competition
KIM Hal-la’s short film The Way Back was awarded the Special Jury Prize in the Muhr AsiaAfrica Shorts Competition during this year’s Dubai International Film Festival. The Best Film prize in the section went to Askhat KUCHINCHIREKOV’s Gas Is Over from Kazakhstan.
KIM’s film is about a young man who, sick of living with his uncle, concocts a scheme to get him moved to a nursing home. The Way Back premiered at this year’s Mise-en-scène Short Film Festival in Seoul, where it won the Grand Prize in the Social Drama Section. The film also screened as part of a recent Korean film showcase at the Sao Paulo International Film Festival.
Also competing in Dubai was KIM Jae-han’s debut Thuy, which premiered earlier this year at the Busan International Film Festival. Though selected for the Muhr AsiaAfrica lineup, KIM’s indie drama walked away empty handed. Anthony CHEN’s Ilo Ilo from Singapore won the top prize while the Iranian film Fish & Cat, directed by Shahram MOKRI, earned the Special Jury Prize and Taiwan’s TSAI Min-liang won Best Director for Stray Dogs, reputed to be the auteur’s last work.
This year’s 10th Dubai International Film Festival took place from December 6th to 14th.
