AN Byung-ki's Chinese Remake Bests Original
Bunshinsaba 2, AN Byung-ki’s sequel to his K-horror remake, has scored the biggest opening weekend for a Chinese-produced horror film on the mainland and after 12 days in theaters has already bested last year’s first installment.
Director AN’s original Bunshinsaba was released back in 2004 and became a respectable hit, attracting 1,001,125 spectators to the theaters. His 2012 remake, produced specially for the Chinese market, was a solid midlevel performer, as it wound up with RMD 61 million (USD 9.93 million). Bunshinsaba 2, released on July 17th, earned RMD 25.73 (USD 4.19 million) during its opening Friday-Sunday period, beating the previous record (RMB 24.3 million) for a Chinese horror film set by Mysterious Island in 2011.
The horror sequel saw its take more than halved in its second weekend and after 12 days has now accrued RMB 72 million (USD 11.7 million), thus eclipsing the first remake’s final tally. Mysterious Island currently remains the highest grossing Chinese-produced horror film with a total of RMB 91.8 million, a figure that Bunshinsaba 2 will have some trouble reaching as it quickly shuffles out of theaters. Though with already 2.3 million spectators and counting, AN’s new film has already posted the horror franchise’s best performance.
