After a successful 9-day run, the 12th Jeonju International Film Festival (JIFF) announced the winners of its competition sections May 6, with the top Woosuk Award in the main international competition section going to Latin American directors Israel Cardenas and Laura Amelia Guzman for Jean Gentil.
The runner up, The Dream Of Eleuteria by Philippine director Remton Siega Zuasola, received the Special Jury Prize, while Korean film An Escalator In World Order by KIM Kyung-man won the JIFF Audience award.
In the Korean feature competition, the top prize JJ Star Award was given to Anyang, Paradise City, the feature debut by PARK Chan-kyong. Earlier this year the director won a Golden Bear at Berlin for co-directing the short film Night Fishing with his older brother PARK Chan-wook. As is tradition at JIFF, the Korean winner became the fest’s closing film.
Other Korean winners were KIM Jae-hwan’s The True-Taste Show, winning the JIFF Audience Award, The Color Of Pain by Lee Kang-hyun taking the Audience Critics’ Award; and the Jeju Island-set Pong Ddol by O Muel winning CJ’s Movie Collage Award.
The NETPAC – Eastar Jet Award went to China’s HAO Jie for Single Man. JIFF’s box office was up 3% from last year with an average 86% seat occupancy rate. Out of 286 screenings, 179 screenings were sold out with 67,095 admissions. The total number of sold seats was 77,590.
