Following a quiet run, Korean films returned to theaters over the recent Lunar New Year holidays and leading the charge was the new romantic ensemble drama NEW YEAR BLUES. From melo-dramatic specialist HONG Ji-young, who previously made Will You Be There? (2016) and the earlier ensemble romance Marriage Blue (2013), the film features four distinct romantic rales and a number of familiar faces to populate each of them.
Ji-ho (KIM Kang-woo), recently divorced, used to be a detective before being demoted to the civil service. Meanwhile, rehabilitation trainer Hyo-young (YOO In-na) is going through a divorce and Ji-ho happens to be assigned to guard her from her estranged husband. The heartbroken Jin-a (LEE Yeon-hee) heads to Argentina after being dumped, where she works at a ski resort. There she meets Jae-hun (YOO Yeon-seok), who also left Korea after suffering from burnout and now works as a wine delivery man. Yongchan (LEE Dong-hwi) runs a travel agency and is going to marry his Chinese fiancé Yaolin (CHEN Du-ling). Already suffering some pre-marriage blues, he’s then scammed out of his wedding savings. Meanwhile, his older sister Yong-mi (YEOM Hye-ran) isn’t keen on their forthcoming nuptials. Rae-hwan (YOO Teo), a snowboarder at the Paralympics, pops the question to his long-time girlfriend Oh-wol (CHOI Soo-young), but despite their love for each other, they face prejudice from people around them.
