"Why is a Japanese man photographing Korea!" Shisei Kuwabara, a 90-year-old master of Japanese photojournalism, has traveled to Korea more than a hundred times over the past sixty years, recording the events large and small that ran through the Korean Peninsula in some 100,000 frames. His lens took in the lives of ordinary people along the Cheonggyecheon stream, the democratization movement, the camp town of Dongducheon, the dispatch of Korean troops to Vietnam, and everyday scenes in Pyongyang. He was deported from the South and barred from entering the North, yet he never let go of the living faces he had found there.
