Time to Be Strong is the 15th human rights film project by the National Human Rights Commission of Korea, shedding light on the often-overlooked struggles of Korean "idols". The film tackles a wide range of human rights violations within the entertainment industry, from financial exploitation and excessive working hours to sexual misconduct and emotional abuse – issues that still persist for many idols outside of major entertainment agencies. Like Fly, Penguin (2009) by Lim Soon-rye and Maggie (2018) by Yi Ok-seop – films that subtly weave social commentary into engaging narratives – Time to Be Strong takes a similar approach. Director Namkoong Sun, known for her candid yet humorous portrayal of pregnancy in Ten Months (2021), once again demonstrates her strength in blending serious themes with an accessible, youthful energy. Following three former idols on a long-overdue school trip, the film is not just a reflection on their past but also a heartfelt exploration of young people navigating change and reclaiming their sense of self. With its poignant message – "I am here. I exist as myself." – Time to Be Strong resonates deeply, making it a must-watch for audiences of all ages. (Jeonju International Film Festival)
