KOFIC Discusses the Tendency of Korean Films in 2016

Held a Seminar with Five Movie Experts

Korean Film Council (KOFIC) held a seminar to look back the tendency of Korean films in 2016 with five movie experts. The seminar was emceed by SONG Gyoung-won, a Cine21 reporter and attended by Jeonju International Film Festival programmer LEE Sang-yong, Cine21 reporter JANG Young-yeop, programmer of the SEOUL International Women’s Film Festival JO Hye-young and film critic HER Nam-woong.

Five movie experts analyzed the keywords of local film industry: advance of women directors, box office success of men’s movies, success of various genre films and local films produced by Hollywood studios.

In 2016, critics wrote good reviews about director LEE Yoon-jeong for Remember You, LEE Kyoung-mi for The Truth Beneath, LEE Hyun-ju for Our Love Story and The World of Us director YOON Ga-eun. However, box office result was different. Films led by male actors like Master and A Violent Prosecutor dominated theaters. Critic HER Nam-woong said that “Women films must be invested and produced before discussing their box office success. People who have the right of investment decision are almost men over 30s and 40s. Such a condition is blocking the way to make women films.”

Meanwhile, 2016’s local film industry included more various genres than before. Zombie thriller TRAIN TO BUSAN topped the box office chart, while comedy LUCK-KEY did well after a long interval of comedies. Mystery horror THE WAILING smashed theaters and disaster films Tunnel and Pandora became commercial hits although the genres had been out of favor in the meantime.

THE WAILING produced by 20th Century Fox and The Age of Shadows by Warner Bros. earned favorable reviews from critics and audiences, so Hollywood studios was regarded to enter the local market successfully.
