KOFIC Report on January 2016 Korean Film Industry

Audiences Decreased, while Foreign Movies Dominated Compared to Last Year
 
 
In January 2016, the total number of viewers and ticket sales have fallen year on year. According to the January monthly report on Korean film industry by Korean Film Council (KOFIC), the total number of viewers in January was 16.89 million, which decreased by 24.9% compared to the same period last year. Also, the sales were only USD 110 million, 24.8% less than a year ago. The number of audiences and total sales in January 2015 were 22.48 million and USD 146 million, respectively.
 
Total 69 local films screened and recorded 45.6% market share, which was less than 62.4% of last year. The number of domestic moviegoers was 7.63 million and the sales reached USD 50 million. Meanwhile, foreign films increased in every part including the number of films and viewers as well as ticket sales compared to the same period last year. They also had more records than local films. Total 214 foreign films were screened, which made USD 60 million and had 9.26 million admissions.
 
On the overall January box office chart, The Himalayas was at the first place with 2.59 million viewers. Inside Men: The original ranked at the second and The Revenant at the third place with 1.89 million and 1.88 million, respectively.
 
The Best performing distributor was CJ E&M Corp. of The Himalayas and four more with 4.62 million admissions and 27.6% of market share. Showbox which distributed four films including Inside Men: The original was at the second place with 2.56 million viewers and 15.3% market share, while 20th Century Fox Korea which distributed 5 titles including The Revenant reached the third place with 11.5% market share.
