The Korean Film Council (KOFIC, Chairman Han Sang-jun) has selected two films, Salsaengbu and Tupiseu (Two Piece), as the final recipients of the Busan Gijang Studios Trial Operation Launch Title Support Program.
Busan Gijang Studios is a public studio complex built by KOFIC in Gijang County, Busan. It has indoor sound stages and an outdoor backlot, and KOFIC is also working to build the first virtual production studio in the Busan, Ulsan and South Gyeongsang region. The program was created to support productions that will use the studios during the trial operation period before the official opening. Beyond selecting strong projects, it aims to raise the studios' profile and to check facilities and operations in advance. A total of four projects applied, and the two selected films, Salsaengbu and Tupiseu, will receive a full waiver of studio rental fees during the trial operation period.
The evaluation committee said the selection process was difficult because every submission had its own distinct appeal and artistic and commercial potential. The evaluation focused on several factors: each project's potential to promote the studios at home and abroad as a film representing the launch, a release date aligned with the official opening, its ability to serve as a test bed for checking facilities and equipment from multiple angles during the trial phase, and a shooting schedule that fits the trial operation timeline and allows operational know-how to build up. The committee added that it hopes the selected films will open a new chapter for Busan Gijang Studios and have a positive ripple effect on the Korean film industry.
Meanwhile, Busan Gijang Studios will run a trial operation from November this year through March next year and is scheduled to officially open in the first half of next year. After opening, it will operate as a production hub supporting film and video productions from Korea and abroad.
