  • In-Person Screenings at Art Nine Cinema, July 17–18; Free Online Screenings July 25–31

Indieground, established by the Korean Film Council (KOFIC, Chairperson Han Sang-jun) to improve the distribution environment for Korean independent and art-house cinema, will co-present the special screening program Cine Academy: Introduction to Short Films together with the Eodum-dan Screening Collective.

This special program, co-organized by Indieground and Eodum-dan, is designed to lower the barrier to Korean short film and help audiences discover its distinctive appeal. Eodum-dan is composed of graduates from the 4th cohort of the Indieground Distribution Academy; following the completion of their training, its members have continued to organize screenings independently while remaining active across various sectors of the industry.

Taking the Cine Academy concept as its guiding framework, the program offers a tailored pathway based on each audience member's familiarity with short film. It is structured around two themed sections — an "Intro" section for viewers new to the format, and an "Advanced" section for those seeking bolder, more formally inventive work — presenting a total of eight short films.

The "Intro" section features spirited works designed to draw in first-time short film viewers with ease. The lineup includes Ban-jang Seon-geo (Class President Election), directed by Park Jeong-min, who is active as both an actor and a director; Gajok Yeonghwa (Family Film, dir. Seong Da-som); Daldalee-neun Nae Rumme (Daldalee Is My Roommate, dir. Kim Da-won); and Naman Aneun Chum (A Dance Only I Know, dir. Kim Tae-yang). The selection showcases the compressed narratives, fresh ideas, and distinct directorial voices unique to short-form filmmaking — all in an accessible package.

The "Advanced" section spotlights more experimental and singular works, charting the expansive spectrum of Korean short film. The lineup includes Safe (세이프, dir. Moon Byoung-gon), winner of the Palme d'Or in the Short Film Competition at the 66th Cannes Film Festival; Byeol-nan TV Baekgwa Jeon-guk-ui Gi-in-deul-eul Chaj-a-seo! Je 617-hoe: Goe-jja Ajeossi-wa Malha-neun Yeomso-ui Gi-myo-han Dong-geo (Strange TV Encyclopedia: In Search of Eccentrics Across the Country! Episode 617 — The Strange Cohabitation of a Quirky Uncle and a Talking Goat, dir. Ahn Yoon-bin); Gong-gan Sok Gi-eok (Memory in Space, dir. Park Dong-gyu); and The Eucharist (영성체, dir. Oh Yu-kyung). Bringing together films recognized at domestic and international festivals for their artistic merit alongside works driven by bold formal experimentation, the section offers a panoramic view of Korean short film at its most expansive.

Cine Academy: Introduction to Short Films will be available in both theatrical and online formats. In-person screenings will take place on Friday and Saturday, July 17 and 18, at Art Nine cinema. Following each screening, a GV (director's Q&A) will provide audiences with the opportunity to engage directly with the filmmakers. A range of on-site events tied to the Cine Academy concept will also be offered, including Academy certificate-themed merchandise giveaways and a photo zone. The program will then move online for a free seven-day run from Saturday, July 25 through Friday, July 31, via the Indieground website (www.indieground.kr). Audiences unable to attend in person can enjoy all program films through the online screening platform.

Eodum-dan shared that they consider it a great honor to present this special program alongside Indieground, and expressed the hope that through it, more audiences will discover the appeal of Korean short films and come to embrace the format as something readily accessible and close to their lives.
