USD 1.7 Billion in Two Consecutive Years, 200 Million Viewers in 3 Consecutive Years
Korean film industry in 2015 has made USD 1.7 billion sales in two years in a row. According to the Final Report on 2015 Korean Film Industry by
Korean Film Council (KOFIC), the domestic film sales has reached USD 1.76 billion, including ticket sales and derivative market sales, which is 4.2% higher than the previous year.
The box office sales in 2015 has increased by 3.1% to USD 1.42 billion, as the number of viewers has risen by 1.0% to 217.29 million. Now the number of Korean viewers has hit 200 million in 3 years in a row. Besides, the digital online market sales including IPTV has jumped by 12.7% to USD 276 million.
In the 2015 box office, the performance of domestic films was salient. With
Ode to My Father,
Assassination and
Veteran each attracting more than 10 million viewers, and
The Throne and
The Priests also doing great, domestic film viewers reached 112.93 million altogether, taking 52.0% of the entire share. Besides, foreign film viewers decreased by 2.8% to 104.36 million.
What is also noteworthy in the 2015 Korean film industry is that collaboration with foreign film industry has become active.
CJ Entertainment made a successful remake of
Miss Granny in China and Vietnam,
Next Entertainment World established HUACE&NEW, a Chinese joint corporation, with Chinese Huace Media, and
Showbox founded Showbox China with Huayi Brothers in China.
