May the Force Be with You in Korea As Well by KIM Hyun-jung /  Jan 16, 2017
STAR WARS Series at the Korean Box Office

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the newest movie in the Star Wars series brought one million viewers nationwide including about 328,000 in Seoul as of January 11th. It scraped over one million moviegoers in two weeks after its release on December 28th 2016. However, that’s not all. The film was released somewhat later in Korea backed by the word that it was a huge hit around the world, but debuted at number two followed by Master. Hollywood blockbuster series like The Avengers, Captain America and Iron Man are popular in Korea, but Star Wars series strangely can’t use their force in this country.

The first movie in the new series, Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015) drew 3.27 million spectators nationwide including one million in Seoul. Previous trilogy was worse. (The first and second films were released before KOFIC provides official statistics, so only the number of viewers in Seoul is currently available.) Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999), Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002) and Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of The Sith (2005) attracted about 750,000, 550,000 and 650,000 audiences in Seoul, respectively.

Star Wars series are particularly weak in Korea. The force will be with you here as well.
