The Return of Entertainment Film Master by HWANG Hee-yun /  Apr 24, 2018
Steven Spielberg’s Box Office Results

Steven Spielberg is back. He is one of those directors who embraced high technologies early and showed his massive talent for entertainment in 3D movies. Ready Player One carries a very young and lively atmosphere for a filmmaker in his seventies. Based on the full understanding of 3D technology, this virtual reality fantasy has elements that definitely stir memories of its audience. Ready Player One is currently a box office hit in 4DX theaters, and attracted 2,222,536 moviegoers so far in Korea, making it Spielberg’s highest grossing movie over the last decade. The film is his fourth biggest box office success of all time, following Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of The Crystal Skull (4.14 million viewers), Minority Report (3.37 million viewers) and War of the Worlds (3.32 million viewers). When multiplexes did not exist, Spielberg made many hit movies including E.T., Jaws, the Indiana Jones series and Jurassic World series but rather than making only entertainment movies, he also continuously made films with historical themes such as Empire Of The Sun, The Color Purple and Schindler’s List. However, in the past decade, Spielberg has not performed very well, as he focused more on cinematic value rather than entertainment as well as more on producing than directing. Since 2018 though, he has been displaying his power as a veteran director to the fullest: he knocked on the door of the Academy Awards with The Post while captivating his audience with Ready Player One and proved himself the king of Hollywood.
