Welcome to the World of Pororo! by HWANG Hee-yun /  Dec 19, 2017
Box Office Trends for Theatrical Versions of PORORO

It has been 14 years since Pororo, known in South Korea as ‘the President of children’, was introduced to the world. Over the past decade and a half, ‘little penguin Pororo’ has not only grown to become an internationally recognizable character beloved by children but also one of the world’s most popular animated series. From time to time, Pororo and his Porong Porong Forest friends leave their wintry surroundings to warm the hearts of kids in cinemas.

Pororo first made the jump from small screens to theaters in January 2013 with the release of a feature that was comprised of a collection of episodes from the TV series. Released to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the animated series, Pororo: The Racing Adventure was a box office success and did well for a children’s animated film, riding the popularity of the original TV series and attracting 929,985 moviegoers. Pororo’s second feature, Pororo: Cyber Space Adventure was released in December 2015 and brought in 445,014 viewers. Though audience numbers were lower for Pororo’s second theatrical outing, Pororo: Cyber Space Adventure earned positive reviews and accolades for taking full advantage of the big screen, with spectacular scenes and story elements that appealed to both children and adults.

In 2017, after a two-year absence, Pororo returned to theaters with a trip to an island inhabited by prehistoric creatures. In this latest feature, title Pororo: Dinosaur Island Adventure, Pororo and his friends go on a journey through a wondrous dinosaur island thanks to a little dinosaur that they encounter in the woods. Currently out in theaters, this animated film has drawn 367,454 moviegoers during its first seven days of release and sold an additional 200,000 tickets last weekend (accumulate 558,155 viewers).
