Comprised of bassist Jang Sung-geon (aged 29) and drummer Kwon Yong-man (aged 31), a grind core duo band, Bamseom Pirates, garnered great attention early on with shocking and witty lyrics like, “All hail to Kim Jong-il” and “I like the commie”, earning them fame as the most controversial band in the Korean music scene. Since then, the band have expanded their musical horizons, addressing issues that abound in South Korean society including anti-communist sentiment and labor rights by participating in concerts held in protest against the Korea–US Free Trade Agreement, the construction of a naval base on Jeju Island and the 3/11 Fukushina Daiichi nuclear disaster. However, in 2012, when their good friend and producer, Park Jung-geun, is arrested for violating the National Security Law after re-tweeting messages from the North Korean account “Uriminzok”, the Bamseom Pirates face the first and biggest crisis of their musical career.
