<Room 708, the Letter from a Private> focuses on KANG Chul-min, a conscientious objector opposed to the dispatchment of troops to Iraq. For eight days he conducted a sit-in demonstration at Room 708 of the Christian Union Center. Originally I was focused on filming his refusal of military service, but then I began to focus on Kang’s actions in opposition to the war. Kang along with the other demonstrators at Room 708 had mo hidden political agenda. Nor did they harbor any complicated political theories or ideology. Rather they were truly sincere and in some ways innocent about their belief. They believed that the war was in reality an invasion. Through my film, I wanted to show how difficult and challenging it was for Kang and the other demonstrators to stand up, particularly in a society that believe military service is the norm. Also, I hope that the film will encourage many to think about ways of supporting Kang and the other demonstrators.less
