Hae-sun, a maiden of a seashore village, marries Sung-gu but becomes a widow in three months. When they meet their friend Kim, a mountain ginseng picker, they follow him to the mountains. Sang-su discovers some mountain ginseng but loses it to Kim through his trickery. Tired of the wandering life, Hae-sun yearns for the ocean. Meanwhile, Sang-su was picking some mountain ginsengs on a cliff when he falls to his death, the ginsengs still in his hand. Hae-sun falls into despair and ultimately returns to her inlet village.
