Asia Press International is a network of freelance journalists working together to be an independent voice, free from economic and political pressure. Launched in Tokyo in 1987, the network has expanded with offices and members in Korea, China, Taiwan, the Philippines and Thailand. From disputes and ethnic conflicts to women’s issues in Palestine, reports from North Korea, forced arrestments and the ‘comfort women’ issue, each member brings their own unique expertise, regardless of any constraints. These topics are presented through broadcasts and periodicals, in the form of documentaries, news reports and photo stories. Occasionally, certain themes are covered through collaboration between several members. The Seoul branch was set up in 1994. In 2014, soon after the tragic events of the Sewol Ferry sinking, Asia Press International produced the first documentary addressing the disaster, <The Truth Shall Not Sink with Sewol> (2014).
