First operated under the commission of KOFIC by the Indie Film Distribution Support Center, a group affiliated to the Association of Korean Independent Film & Video, Indie Space opened in central Seoul in 2007 with three screens. The cinema had to close momentarily at the end of 2009 due to political strife, and the next year the Group of Citizens for the Development of Independent Film Theaters was formed to take over the operations.
